All worker wasps die out during the winter; the only wasps that survive are the queen wasps. Queen wasps hibernate during the winter inside the old nest or construct a small “golf ball” sized hibernation cell.

During April and until early June, the queen wasp will leave the old nest or hibernation cell and begin the construction of a brand new nest in a new location. The old nest or hibernation cells are never used again.

Nests are mostly made out of a mixture of chewed wood and wasp saliva. Queen wasps will often start to build their nests in roof voids, wall cavities or in outbuildings.

By the time September arrives the nest can be as large as a small armchair with up to 10,000 wasps using it!

During June and July you are unlikely to get wasp stings, as wasps are too busy chasing insects and bringing up the larval wasps. However as autumn arrives these activities stop and the wasps start to feed on fermenting, over ripe fruit. These “drunken wasps” are now at their most dangerous and can become very aggressive, with a wasp sting more likely to happen.

* Regular blanket spraying really helps to prevent wasps from returning to the same areas of your home or garden,  however, although the original nest is used only once, they may reconstruct a new nest quite close to their previous one.

* * Swimming pools in the summer act as a 'wasp magnet' they just need a drink.

Elimination is the most effective action...

...Swat at a wasp or hornet.                                                                            They are more likely to attack and sting when aggravated.

...Smash a wasp or hornet.                                                                            When crushed, they give off an alarm pheromone that can cause others in the area to attack.

...Wear perfume, scented hairspray or lotion, or brightly colored clothes if you are going outdoors. Wasps & Hornets are attracted to these things.

...Let children play in overgrown or wooded areas.                                          These are prime nesting sites for some species of wasps & hornets.

...Use gasoline to eliminate an underground nest.                                         Gasoline should never be poured into underground nest holes.

...Look before you sip your drink.                                                                       Wasps & Hornets are attracted to sweet foods and drinks like soda and juices.

...Cover trash containers and keep them away from eating areas.                        Wasps & Hornets forage in garbage for food scraps and drink containers.

...Try to remain calm in the presence of wasps, or hornets.                                    Move slowly and deliberately and gently brush the insect away if it lands on you.
